Matthew Lyon is the recently appointed Professor of Tuba and Euphonium atBall State University. Previously the Instructor of Low Brass at the University of Windsor and the Flint Institute of Music, he holds a Master’s of Music degree from Depaul University, a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from The University of Michigan, and is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy. He has attended the Pokorny Low Brass Seminar at the University of Redlands and was the first recipient of the New Horizons Fellowship at Aspen Music Festival on tuba.
Matthew was Principal Tubist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for two seasons and has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and is currently principal tuba of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. Professor Lyon has performed recitals and held master classes internationally in Colombia-South America, Austria, and throughout the United States including Washington D. C., Texas, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and New York. He has been a featured soloist with the Interlochen Arts Academy Band, the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, and the Ball State Wind Ensemble at the American Bandmasters Association Conference. As a chamber musician, he has performed with MusicNOW (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, the Motor City Brass Quintet, Today’s Brass Quintet, and is a member of the Da Camera Brass Quintet and the Great Lakes Brass Quintet.
In addition to teaching at Ball State University, Professor Lyon serves on the faculty at the Interlochen Low Brass Institute and faculty and juror for the Filharmonica Joven de Colombia, South America. His principal teachers include Floyd Cooley, Gene Pokorny, Warren Deck, Wesley Jacobs, Fritz Kaenzig, Thomas Riccobono, and Marianne Ploger.
